  • When you are cruising in tropical waters (35°N to 35°S) and eat fish you catch yourself, you need to be aware of the risks of ciguatera poisoning. First herbivorous reef fish eats poisonous algae. The reef fish is then consumed by bigger carnivorous fish, which pass the poison up along the food chain.

    All fish are not poisonous, this occurs only sporadically. Generally it's non-fatal and of short duration. Ciguatera poisoning is most commonly associated with groupers, barracudas, snappers, jacks, mackerel, and triggerfish.

    Internationally it's most prevalent in: (N and NE) Australia, the Caribbean, and South Pacific Islands. A company in Hawaii, Cigua Check, has a chemical testing kit. Links to further information:
